Dr. Lichtman earned his Ph.D. at Dartmouth College in 1989, conducted a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of the late Dr. Billy R. Martin in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology from 1989-1993, and then joined the faculty at VCU where he rose to the level of Professor. He assumed the role of Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies in 2015 in the School of Pharmacy. Dr. Lichtman possesses over 25 years of experience as a behavioral pharmacologist investigating the pharmacological effects of cannabinoids and elucidating the physiological function of the endogenous cannabinoid system using a wide range laboratory animal models of pain and inflammation, drug abuse, and learning and memory. Key scientific contributions include elucidating the consequences of inhibiting and genetically deleting endocannabinoid regulating enzymes, including fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL), and diacylglycerol lipase (DAGL). Additionally, the Lichtman laboratory has elucidated the neural substrates of CB1 receptor mediated antinociception and memory impairment. Dr. Lichtman laboratory has been continuously funded for over 20 years on numerous NIH-funded grants (e.g., R01, R21, P01, P30, and P50 awards). He has mentored over 20 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom were supported by F31, F32, and T32 grants. Finally, Dr. Lichtman has collaborated with other scientists at VCU, as well as throughout the United States and international community.
